Microplastics - IDP 4

Microplastics

Plastic is everywhere. A lot of it ends up in the ocean. Most plastics in the ocean break up into very small particles. These small plastic bits are called "microplastics." Other plastics are intentionally designed to be small. They're called microbeads and are used in many health and beauty products. They pass unchanged through waterways into the ocean. Various scientific studies have shown that microplastics are hazardous to human health and the environment, especially marine and aquatic habitats.

The students at The Landmark School were given projects on the topic "Microplastics" and students have gained a greater understanding of the threats faced by a variety of organisms, including endangered species and the need to reduce plastic pollution. Students have understood that they can personally play an important role in reducing microplastic pollution and increasing recycling rates for a healthier environment. Students have gained a greater understanding of the need to carefully use all resources in ways that are not wasteful and damaging the environment.
